Waist beads are a traditional African accessory that is comprised of small glass beads on a string or wire worn around the waist or hips. In Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, and other West African countries, waist beads are a symbol of femininity, fertility, sensuality, and spiritual well-being.

Waist beads are commonly used to gauge changes in weight. Rather than stepping on a scale, people can use waist beads to stay aware of any weight gain or loss in the abdomen. Waist beads don't stretch. If you were to gain weight, the beads will sit higher on the waist or feel tight. Non Traditional stretchy waist beads will be coming out soon.
Tutorial
My waist beads are one size fits most. To tie them on, you simply place them around your waist, decide where you want them to sit, remove the excess beads and tie 3-4 knots. Once you are sure the beads are secure, cut off the excess string and beads. Be sure not to tie them too tight or else they will break!
